Ocean & Marine Careers for Kids

Do you love tide pools and shipwrecks? Do you wonder why water looks different after a storm? You could grow up to study the ocean. Marine biologists study sea animals. Oceanographers study currents and sand on the seafloor. Underwater archeologists study old ships under water. Hydrologists study how rivers and rain reach the sea.

Day in the life

What these people actually do

A marine wildlife biologist does not live in a submarine. Most days they tag fish, collect water samples, read sonar maps, and write reports. They track how animals are doing after a warm summer or a spill. Field days are wet and start early. Office days mean spreadsheets and maps.

Oceanographers study currents, seafloor mud, and water chemistry. Underwater archeologists map shipwrecks the same way land diggers work: grid, photo, label. They do not make up missing pieces. Hydrologists track how water moves through rivers and land. That water eventually reaches the sea. Floods and droughts can change coastlines.

Zoologists and wildlife biologists (marine focus)

These scientists study animals in the wild and in zoos or aquariums. A marine focus means coastal and ocean species — fish, seabirds, seals, crabs, and the food webs that connect them. They count animals, track migration routes, and test how pollution or warming changes behavior.

Field work might mean tagging a sea turtle, setting a camera trap on a beach, or collecting water samples near a reef. Back in the lab, they look at tissue samples under a microscope and enter data into spreadsheets. Their reports help parks, fisheries, and governments decide how to protect species.

Life-science and ecosystem modules teach food webs and habitats long before a kid sees a research boat. The same habits — observe, record, compare — start in elementary school.

What a day at work looks like

A marine biologist wakes before sunrise to meet the boat crew at the dock. On the water, they help pull in a net, measure each fish, and tag ones that match their study. After lunch back at the lab, they enter numbers into a computer and compare this year's catch to last year's. Before leaving, they write a short note about one odd finding to share with the team tomorrow.

Most zoologists and wildlife biologists need a college degree to start. Jobs are expected to grow about 2 percent from 2024 to 2034. That is slower than most jobs.

Geoscientists (oceanography)

Oceanographers measure currents, sediment, and water chemistry. They explain how the ocean stores heat and moves nutrients that feed plankton, fish, and entire food chains. They work on ships, in labs, and on computers — not underwater all day.

Some oceanographers drop instruments over the side of a ship to record temperature and salt levels at different depths. Others run computer models that predict how a current might change if the climate warms. Their work helps us understand storms, sea-level rise, and where fish populations might shift.

School skills for this path show up early: measuring, graphing data, and learning how Earth's systems connect land, air, and sea.

What a day at work looks like

An oceanographer starts the day checking weather reports to see if the research ship can leave port safely. On deck, they lower a sensor package into the water and watch a screen as depth, temperature, and salinity numbers appear. After dinner in the ship's galley, they upload the day's readings to a shared database. Before bed, they sketch a quick map of where the warmest water sat — a clue for tomorrow's route.

Anthropologists and archeologists (underwater)

Underwater archeologists dig and record sites under water — shipwrecks, drowned villages, and old harbor structures. They draw grids on the seafloor, photograph every artifact in place, bag finds, and write detailed notes. Scuba is one tool they use, but mapping and careful recording matter just as much.

Saving wet wood and metal is a special skill. A piece of old hull that dries too fast can crack and crumble. Archeologists treat objects gently and document exactly where each item was found so future researchers can trust the story.

The same evidence habits from land digs apply underwater: label everything, never invent missing pieces, and mark what you still do not know.

What a day at work looks like

An underwater archeologist checks their scuba gear and reviews the site grid drawn yesterday. Descending to a shipwreck, they photograph a broken anchor still sitting in the sand and place a small tag beside it for the map. Back on the dive boat, they rinse artifacts in fresh water and log each one's depth and position. In the afternoon, they meet with the team to decide which section of the wreck to document next week.

Most anthropologists and archeologists need a master's degree to start. Some jobs need a Ph.D.

Hydrologists

Hydrologists study how water moves on and under land. They work with rivers, underground aquifers, flood zones, and the paths rain takes before it reaches the coast. Their measurements show how much freshwater actually arrives at the ocean — and what might change that flow.

In the field, they wade into streams with boots and measuring tools. They record water height, speed, and quality. In the office, they build graphs and models that predict what happens during a drought or a heavy storm. Cities and farmers depend on this work to plan for floods and to protect drinking water.

Measurement math and Earth-systems thinking are the school skills that connect directly to this career.

What a day at work looks like

A hydrologist drives to a river monitoring station early in the morning, before the day's heat changes the water level. They download data from an automatic sensor and take a manual reading to double-check. After lunch, they update a watershed map on their computer, marking spots where groundwater feeds the stream. Before heading home, they email a short report to a city planner who asked whether a new development might affect downstream flow.

What you can try right now

Small actions sized for grades 3–6 — no special gear required.

Fill two clear jars with water. Add one spoon of salt to one jar. Float an egg (or a grape) in each. Write which jar floats the object and why. Salt changes how water behaves. That is a starter oceanography experiment.

On a walk near a drain or creek, sketch where water would go after rain for three blocks. Label high and low spots. You just made a tiny watershed map. Hydrologists start with maps like this.

Pick a fish or crab at a market or aquarium photo. Write three facts you can prove by looking. Write two questions that need a lab or field trip. Marine biology lives in that second list.
