A paleontologist spends more time in a lab with a small pick than in a desert with a shovel. Field digs matter. They map a quarry, label plaster-wrapped bones, and photograph every layer. But the long work is slow. They clean rock from a vertebra. They measure tooth wear. They compare one bone to hundreds in a collection drawer. When the evidence is thin, they write that down. What a day at work looks like

A paleontologist arrives at the quarry before the afternoon heat softens the rock. They brush dust from a partially exposed rib and mark its position on a grid map. After lunch in a dusty tent, they carry the field notes to a lab trailer and compare today's find to photos from last season. Before sunset, they wrap the rib in burlap and plaster for safe transport and write a label with the exact layer depth.

Museum technicians and conservators

These workers prepare, restore, and care for objects in museum collections, including fossils. A technician might wrap a fragile bone in protective material, build a storage cradle, or install a mount so the public can see a skeleton without damaging it.

Natural sciences managers

Natural sciences managers plan and coordinate research teams, including digs, lab programs, and museum science departments. They used to be scientists themselves β€” many spent years in the field before moving into leadership.

The job shifts from personal discovery to making sure other people's work stays funded, safe, and on schedule. They review grant proposals, set safety rules for field sites, and decide which research questions are worth pursuing this season.

What a day at work looks like

A natural sciences manager starts the day reviewing a grant application for next summer's dig and checking whether the team has enough safety gear. Mid-morning, they meet with lab staff about a backlog of specimens waiting to be cataloged. After lunch, they join a video call with museum leaders to plan a new dinosaur exhibit timeline. Craft and fine artists (science illustration)

Science illustrators draw reconstructions that textbooks and museum panels need: feathered dinosaurs, cutaway skulls, and habitat scenes that match the fossil evidence. Their art must survive peer review from scientists who know every bone.

What you can try right now

Small actions sized for grades 3–6 β€” no special gear required.

Pick one object outside β€” a leaf, a cracked sidewalk, a chicken bone from dinner (cleaned). Draw it twice: once from memory, once with the object in front of you. Circle three details the second drawing caught that the first missed. That gap is the difference between guessing and observing. That is the paleontology habit.

Next, make a layer cake in a clear jar: sand, soil, pebbles. Drop a small toy in one layer. Write a note: which layer holds the toy, and what would someone find first if they dug from the top? You just built a tiny geologic column.

Visit a natural history museum if you can, or a virtual fossil collection online. Choose one specimen. Write five facts you can prove by looking, and two questions you cannot answer from the display alone. Real scientists live in that second list.

What subjects do you need to be a paleontologist?

Strong science helps β€” especially Earth science and biology. You also need math to measure, graph, and compare samples. Reading matters because research papers and field notes are long. In AGA terms, start with Modules S3.2, S4.4, and S6.1. Later schooling adds geology, chemistry, and often a graduate degree for research roles. But the evidence habit begins in elementary school.

Is paleontology a good job?
