Atmospheric scientists study weather and climate. Climate specialists look at long-term patterns — decades of temperature, storm tracks, and rainfall — not just tomorrow's forecast. They share what they learn with the public and with leaders who make rules.

Their work mixes outdoor instruments, computer models, and statistics. Coding and math go hand in hand with science here. A small error in a unit conversion can throw off an entire model.

What a day at work looks like

An atmospheric scientist checks overnight satellite images and weather-station data from across the region. Geoscientists (glaciology)

Glaciologists study ice sheets, glaciers, and frozen ground. They measure how thick ice is, how fast it moves, and what happens when it melts. Ice cores pulled from deep inside a glacier are like timelines that show past climate.

For five mornings, write down the outdoor temperature and sky at the same time. Graph the temperatures. Write one thing the graph shows and one thing it cannot prove. That is climate thinking on a small scale.
